Special message concerning Economic Development District taxes

As your voice of business, our Board of Directors, at its meeting held last week, has directed staff to share this information regarding ordinances enabling a new three-quarter cent sales tax in certain economic development districts, most of which are located in Saint Tammany West.

There are two reasons behind sharing the attached information. One is that while the public notice requirements about these ordinances that empower the Parish Council to approve an additional sales tax have been met, we do not believe that a large enough majority of business people read the publication where the notices are posted. Two, in light of the state budget crisis, we understand the need for the tax, however, we do not see where all of the businesses in the districts have been notified in advance, therefore we are using our voice to enable that.

Please take a look at the attached Q&A. These questions were posed by our Board and Governmental Affairs Committee, with answers provided from the Parish Administration. This infographic also answers questions you may have.

If you have input or concerns about this issue, please contact your Parish Councilmember. All council members can be contacted via email directly from the parish website.
