Resolve to get involved

It’s the New Year! A time to usher in change and a fresh start. While your coworkers may be signing up for a gym membership or a committing to a juice cleanse in 2017, perhaps you’re inspired to do something that benefits others and the community around you.

Volunteers play a vital role at the St. Tammany West Chamber. If you have a passion for building our local business community, see how far your talents can lead you. Plus, with the good will, possible business opportunities and contacts you may pick up along the way – it’s a resolution that keeps on giving, both to yourself and to others.

If you’re ready to make a difference, sign up to participate on one of our committees. We count on volunteers — at all levels — to become involved, engaged and passionate about our mission. There are many ways to volunteer that are fulfilling and make a real impact. For example:

Our Small Business Council assists members through job fairs, seminars, recognition awards and trade shows. The committee keeps current with trends and issues so they can help our member businesses grow and survive.

The very active Public Policy and Advocacy Committee (formerly known as Governmental Affairs) keeps a watchful eye on the big picture when it comes to Louisiana politics and notifies the Chamber Board when a specific position needs to be taken. Members monitor business-related legislation at the local, state, and federal levels and gauge its possible effects on the business community. This committee also offers members a unique opportunity to meet with elected officials who are often guest speakers at meetings.

The Ambassadors Council members take the lead role in assuring that each of our member businesses is valued, represented and connected by calling on existing members to update them on current activities, policies, and special events as well as asking about the member’s business and how the Chamber can best serve them. Ambassadors also act as official greeters at our monthly luncheons, Business After Hours and Ribbon Cutting events to help new members and first-time attendees feel more at ease and to introduce them to other members.

Our Northshore Rising Professionals bring young professionals together to engage with one another and the business, political and community leadership in an effort to improve our community and provide a voice of young professionals. They boast over 50 active members and their goals include providing social and networking opportunities, collaboration with other committees, and community outreach.

And finally, if you like a good party, our Southern Nights Fundraiser Committee assist in planning all aspects of the big event, including decorations, restaurant solicitation, and silent auction. This fundraiser has quickly become an important and anticipated social event, while also providing non-dues revenue to support our many membership programs and services.

There you go: a way to achieve a resolution to help yourself and the St. Tammany business community. For more information on any of our committees, contact our office at 985-892-3216. And we hope everyone has a very productive and prosperous new year!
